Canadian immigration laws give opportunities for foreign nationals to obtain an “open work permit” if they meet certain criteria.
The advantage of an “Open work permit” is that it is not job specific. So an applicant need not have to go through the Labour Market Impact assessment from employment or Social Development Canada.
He/she also need not have a valid offer letter from employers in Canada.
Who can apply for on open-work permit?
The spouses or common-law partners of foreign temporary workers
The spouses or common-law partners of foreign students
International students who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution
Dependant Family members of Permanent Residents
International students who have graduated from Canada are eligible to apply for an open-work permit if they meet some requirements set by Post – Graduation Work Permit program.
Spouse of foreign temporary worker is eligible to get open work permit if their spouse , that is principal temporary worker’s job is one among Level ‘0’,’A’ or ‘B’ according to the National Occupation Classification, and also if the principal temporary worker is permitted to work in Canada for a period of at least six months.
Spouse of a foreign student is eligible for an open work permit if the foreign student is a full-time student at diploma/degree in government funded college/university or foreign student has graduated and is the holder of a valid work permit for a job specific to his studies.
The validity of an open work permit coincides with the validity of work/study permit of foreign temporary worker/student.
Open Work permits are also issued to candidates for the International Experience Canada Program
